The San José Volcano is located on the border between Chile and Argentina, standing imposingly at the bottom of the Volcán River valley. It is currently active but on green alert. Its last eruption was in 1960. It has a crater measuring 2 kilometers by 500 meters, inside which you can see a hanging glacier, fumaroles, and deposits of extrusive igneous rock from its last eruptions. The best time to climb to its summit is between November and April when the weather is more stable and temperatures are warmer. In winter, winds at the summit are usually over 80 kilometers per hour, and temperatures can drop below -40° Celsius.
